The University of Hohenheim figures amongst the best quarter of universities ranked worldwide in the life sciences and among the best third in the business and economic sciences

It is small and highly specialized – and holds its own against larger, comprehensive universities: For the life sciences the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart is one of the world's top 201-250 universities, and in the field of business and economics it ranks among the top 251-300 universities. This was the result of the THE World University Rankings by Subject published by the Times Higher Education (THE) Supplement on 22 January 2025. For the life sciences, the University of Hohenheim is in the top quarter of the 1,143 ranked universities. For business and economics, it is in the top third of 990 ranked universities.


According to the THE Ranking, the life sciences encompass the agricultural and forestry sciences, biology, veterinary science, and sports science. Business and economics encompass business administration and corporate management, accounting and finance, economics, and econometrics.


Bioeconomy combines business, economics, and the life sciences

At the University of Hohenheim, the two areas are linked by a common guiding theme: bioeconomy. Their goal is to create a sustainable concept for a future-proof economy that conserves energy and resources.

Research and teaching can only contribute to this if they take into account the interplay of economic, ecological, social, ethical, and legal aspects. This is how the University of Hohenheim is meeting the major challenges of our time such as climate change mitigation, food security, species protection, and the sustainable management of natural resources.


BACKGROUND: Times Higher Education (THE) Ranking by Subject

The Times Higher Education Ranking (THE) by Subject 2024 includes 990 universities worldwide in the field of business and economics and 1,143 in life sciences. Various areas are included in the evaluation and weighted differently: teaching (life sciences 26.8%/business and economics 30.4%), research (26.5%/31.6%), quality of research (35.2%/25%), international orientation (7.5%/9%), and third-party funding from industry (both 4%). Only universities with at least 1,000 publications over the last five years are included in the ranking by subject. In addition, at least 5 percent or at least 50 members of academic staff must work in the respective area.
