Bioeconomy - leading topic of the University of Hohenheim

The bioeconomy is a holistic concept for a sustainable economy that conserves both energy and resources. The raw materials originate from plants, animals, microorganisms, or from organic waste streams.

As the leading agricultural university in Germany, the University of Hohenheim focuses on researching efficiently managed and climate-resilient agroecosystems for the environmentally and nature-friendly production of biomass and food.

For its products, processes, and services, the bioeconomy uses biological, chemical, and physical conversion processes as part of a circular economy.
Through innovative technologies, biological substances and processes can thus be better utilized in order to increasingly dispense with fossil raw materials such as coal or petroleum in the future.

Only in the interplay of economical, ecological, social, and ethical as well as legal aspects can research contribute to a sustainable bioeconomy. To this end, the three faculties of the University of Hohenheim optimally complement each other to find holistic solutions for the major challenges of our time - climate protection, food security, resource conservation, and sustainable management of natural resources.

The Bioeconomy Head Office supports Hohenheim's networking activities at the state, federal, and EU levels and carries out projects to further develop bioeconomy teaching and transfer.

Bioeconomy - what is it?

The bioeconomy is as old as humankind:

For nearly 2 million years, humans lived off raw materials that plants, animals, and microorganisms gave them.

It was only 200 years ago that the bioeconomy was interrupted by the petroleum age.

Now it is time for a new, modern, and knowledge-based bioeconomy. This not only replaces conventionally produced products. It also creates new, sustainably produced products and holds great opportunities for growth and employment.
